Understanding Masquerading Spirits in Dreams

What Are Masquerading Spirits?

Masquerading spirits are entities that can disguise themselves in dreams. They often appear in forms that are familiar or comforting to the dreamer. One example of a possible masquerading spirit is dreaming that you’ve been visited by a deceased loved one, extending their hand to offer you an object or message.

Such experiences, while deeply unsettling, might not be mere figments of your imagination but encounters with spirits masquerading in familiar forms. These entities take advangate of many believers through the most vulnerable channel we possess: our dreams.

So what’s the goal? The goal of masquerading spirits is not just to establish spiritual covenants or agreements during these dream encounters but to do so in a way that could lead to severe negative consequences in the dreamer’s waking life, such as sickness, poverty, or general misfortune.

Historical and Biblical Context

The concept of spiritual communication through dreams is not new and has roots in various cultures and religious texts. For example, Solomon’s dream in 1 Kings 3:5-14 was a channel through which he received wisdom from God.

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

1 Kings 3:5

However, not all spiritual interactions in dreams are positive. Just as there are good forces at work, evil spirits also seek to exploit this realm. The Apostle Paul’s warning in 2 Corinthians 11:14 about Satan masquerading as an angel of light underscores the deceptive nature of these entities. This metaphor is not limited to Satan alone but extends to his servants who disguise themselves to further their malicious agenda.

The Cultural Presence of Masquerade Spirits

Interestingly, the concept of masquerade spirits transcends the dream world and finds expression in various cultural practices, particularly in festivals across Africa and the Caribbean. These festivals often involve participants wearing masks, symbolizing the spirits’ ability to conceal their true intentions, much like their actions in the spiritual realm.

How to Protect Yourself

Protecting oneself from the influence of masquerading spirits in dreams is crucial for maintaining spiritual well-being and peace of mind. Here are five effective strategies to safeguard against these deceptive encounters:

  1. Prayer and Spiritual Warfare: Begin and end your day with prayer, asking for divine protection over your mind and dreams. Utilize scripture-based prayers that specifically address spiritual warfare, invoking God’s power to shield you from the enemy’s deceit. Ephesians 6:10-18 talks about putting on the full armor of God, which is an excellent guide for building your spiritual defenses. Don’t forget Psalms 91, which is a Psalm for protection.
  1. Cancel Negative Dreams: If you wake up from a dream that feels unsettling OR you suspect was influenced by a masquerading spirit, verbally cancel its effects in the name of Jesus. Declare that any covenants or agreements made in the dream are null and void and ask for God’s cleansing and protection. P.S. Please read this blog post on how to cancel negative dreams.
  1. Close Open Doors: Reflect on your life and close any open doors that could invite negative spiritual influence. This includes repenting of sins, forgiving those who have wronged you, and renouncing any known involvement with practices or items associated with negative spiritual entities. Maintaining a lifestyle of holiness and alignment with God’s word helps fortify your spiritual defenses.
  1. Seek Discernment and Your Spiritual Eyes to be Opened: Regularly ask God for the gift of discernment so that you can better recognize the source of your dreams and understand their meaning. Discernment will help you distinguish between divine messages, your own subconscious thoughts, and deceptive spirits attempting to influence you. Note: The story of Elisha praying for his servant’s eyes to be opened to see the spiritual realm in 2 Kings 6:17 serves as an inspiring example.
  1. Create a Peaceful Sleep Environment: Before going to bed, ensure your sleeping environment promotes spiritual peace and protection. This can involve playing soft worship music, reading the Bible, anointing your room with oil as a symbolic act of setting apart the space for God’s presence. The atmosphere around you can influence the quality of your dreams, so creating a space that feels safe and spiritually guarded is beneficial. (P.S. I try my best to not browse my phone at night time!)
