In 2 Samuel 6:11-12 and 1 Chronicles 13:14, we read about Obed Edom, a man who received an incredible blessing from God. Obed Edom was a Gittite (inhabitant of Gath) and a Levite responsible for guarding the Ark of the Covenant.
Why did God bless the house of Obed Edom?
Here’s the story: When King David attempted to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, he was unsuccessful and left it at the house of a Levite- Obed Edom’s house for three months. During this time, Obed Edom was greatly blessed by God.
Josephus, a Jewish historian from the first century, mentioned that Obed Edom was “a poor man in a low estate.” Later, we find out in 1 Chronicles 26:6 that the blessings he received flowed generationally to the point that his son named Shemaiah, and grandchildren became “leaders in their father’s family because they were very capable men.”
This shows that Obed Edom’s blessing was not just temporary, but it had a lasting impact on his family.

Obed Edom’s blessing didn’t just affect him personally, but it also impacted his entire household. I thank you for your promise of blessings over our homes. Just as Obed-Edom’s entire household was blessed because of the ark of the covenant, I pray that you would bless my home and family abundantly.

5. Repentance and Worship
Levites had numerous responsibilities, as outlined in Numbers 18. Additionally, 2 Chronicles 5:11-14 further elaborates that they praised and thanked God!
So it’s not far-fetched to deduce that Obed-Edom’s life was transformed not just because of the physical presence of the ark but also because of his repentance and worship. He would have been servicing the Ark of the covenant.
Brethren, as we pray for blessings, let us also ask God to reveal areas in our lives that need repentance and healing.
Furthermore, let us cultivate a lifestyle of worship. When we worship God with a sincere heart, we invite His presence and blessings into our lives.

Thank you for the example of Obed-Edom in understanding the importance of repentance and worship. Please reveal any areas in my life that need healing and forgiveness.

When Obed-Edom received the ark of the covenant, his whole household witnessed the blessings that followed. Not only that, Obed Edom’s blessings were tangible, and people could see it! Rather, we must share our testimonies and give glory to God. This not only encourages others but also serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in our lives.

7. Understand the Mercy Seat and Value and Power Blood of the Lamb
In the Old Testament (during Obed Edom’s time) , the mercy seat was a golden covering (or lid) on top of the Ark of the Covenant. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would sprinkle blood from a sacrificial lamb onto the mercy seat to atone for the sins of the people. This blood was a symbol of redemption and forgiveness.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ became our sacrificial lamb, shedding His blood on the cross to atone for our sins once and for all. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, His blood covers us, making us righteous in God’s eyes. This is why we can boldly approach God’s throne of grace and receive mercy in times of need (Hebrews 4:16).
The blood of Jesus also has the power to redeem us from every curse and bring about blessings. Galatians 3:13-14 says that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us so that in Him we might receive the blessings promised to Abraham.

As I pray for blessings and transformation, I am reminded that it is all possible because of your son Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Through His blood and sacrifice, I can boldly approach your throne.
