I’m super excited to share this topic on the P.R.A.Y prayer acronym! ❤️Why? Because prayer is essential for any Christian’s spiritual journey and growth in faith.

For starters, Christians have used mnemonic acronyms to remember the structure of their prayers for many years! One such acronym is P.R.A.Y., which stands for Praise, Repent, Ask, and Yield.

In summary, the P.R.A.Y acronym is a helpful tool to guide believers in their prayer life, helping them to focus and organize their thoughts as they pray.

Christian mnemonic acronyms (quick personal story)

I remember growing up in the church and being surrounded by Christian mnemonic phrases and acronyms such as W.W.J.D (What Would Jesus Do?) or P.U.S.H (Pray Until Something Happens).

These have been incredibly helpful for me over the years, so I decided to research the origin of these types of acronyms within Christianity.

One of the first people to use mnemonic acronyms in Christianity was Mary Virginia Terhune (Marion Harland), who mentioned the ACTS prayer model in an 1884 publication. (credit: 1884 Publication “A Chronicle of Old Virginia” By Marion Harland via HathiTrust Digital p.150)

The “A” stands for Adoration of God; the “C” stands for Confession of sins; the “T” stands for Thanksgiving; and the “S” stands for Supplication or Requests. This acronym (plus many others) has become popular among Christians, as it offers a framework to help guide one in prayer and devotion.

Mnemonic/Prayer acronyms are super helpful…

In this modern era, where it’s easy to become distracted and overwhelmed with life’s demands, using mnemonic acronyms helps me stay focused on what matters.

These mnemonic acronyms have been so helpful in my spiritual growth over the years, allowing me to remember fundamental principles of Christianity through simple word groupings.😊They were especially helpful in primary and high school when mastering the Epistles, Pentateuch, and other key ideas and facts in scripture.

Each acronym is unique in its own right, containing words that stir up emotion or challenge us to consider something in a new way. In my prior example, I mentioned W.W.J.D. This nostalgic acronym (WWJD) can be used as a reminder to check our own actions and motivations against what Jesus would do in any given situation.

No matter how you use them, Christian mnemonic acronyms are incredibly powerful tools that help us grow closer to God and become more like Him.

Tip: So the next time you’re feeling discouraged or overwhelmed, take a moment to remember an acronym that resonates with you and use it as a reminder of God’s love for you.

P.R.A.Y- A Prayer Acronym

P.R.A.Y stands for Praise, Repent, Ask, and Yield.

These four words are powerful tools in prayer that can help shape our conversations with God and give us a structure to express our needs, prayerfully, and wants while recognizing our gratitude for His grace.

1. Praise

The first step in the P.R.A.Y acronym is Praise. As Colossians 4:2 says, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

Christians should start their prayers with an attitude of thanksgiving and praise for all of the blessings that God has given. This step can also involve praising God and thanking Him for His goodness.

Praise is an excellent way to start any prayer! When we praise God, it acknowledges the greatness and power of our Lord.

We can look to the Psalms for examples of how to praise God; Psalm 100:1-5 and Psalm 150:6 are excellent verses for this purpose.

Here are five verses about praise:

1. Psalm 8:1 – “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
2. Psalm 103:1-5 – “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”
3. Psalm 47:1 – “Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy!”
4. Psalm 145:3 – “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable.”
5. Psalm 100:4-5 -“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

Here are some tips on how to use praise in our prayers:

• Acknowledge the greatness of God before asking for anything.
• Remind ourselves of His goodness that is worthy of recognition.
• Thank Him for all He has done for us.
• Think about a particular act or character attribute of God that you appreciate and give thanks for it.
• Make a list of your favorite scriptures before praying so that you can easily remember them.

A sample prayer of praise:

Father, thank You for you are [insert names of God, i.e., Jehovah Jireh, El Olam, etc.]. I praise you because you are My ever-present help in times of trouble. Thank You for Your unending mercy and grace that has been given to me. Thank You that Your love is a never-ending, all-encompassing love. I am truly humbled by the greatness of who You are and what You have done for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

2. Repent

Next, in Repentance, Christians should take time to confess their sins and ask for forgiveness.

This is an important step of prayer as it allows believers to restore the relationship with God that may have been damaged by their sin.

Repentance is a critical component of prayer; it acknowledges our shortcomings and faults in front of God. It is an opportunity for us to confess our sins and ask for forgiveness from Him.

In terms of spiritual jurisdiction, it also silences the accuser of the brethren when we repent (see my courts of heaven blog post).

Here are five verses about repentance:

1. Isaiah 55:7 – “Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him.”
2. 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
3. 2 Corinthians 7:10 – “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”
4. Psalm 38:18 – ” I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.”
5. Psalm 51:10 – “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Here are some tips on how to use repentance in our prayers:

• Make sure you acknowledge your faults and mistakes before asking for anything.
• Ask God to help you recognize any sins in your life and consciously try to turn away from them.
• Acknowledge that we are powerless without His grace and mercy.
• Take the time, to be honest with yourself about what areas of your life need improvement, and ask God for guidance and strength in this process.
• Spend some time reflecting on how your sins have affected your relationship with Him.

A sample prayer of repentance:

Lord, I come to You humbly admitting my mistakes and failures [state them]. I repent for not living up to Your instructions. Please forgive me for any wrongs I have done or allowed in my life, and help me make changes that will bring me closer to You. I thank you for the blood of Jesus Christ that allows me to approach Your throne of grace with confidence! Lord, thank you for your mercy and grace to help me in my time of need (see Hebrews 4:14-16). In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

3. Ask

The third step is to Ask. This is the time to ask God for whatever it is that you need, whether it be strength, provision, or guidance.

It’s important to remember to ask in faith and trust that God will answer your prayers according to His will and purposes.

Asking is an integral part of prayer; it allows us to express what we need and ask for God’s help with our struggles.

Here are five verses about asking:

1. Matthew 7:7 – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
2. John 16:23-24 – “Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
3. Mark 11:24 – “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”
4. Matthew 21:22 – ” And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
5. Philippians 4:6-7 – “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Here are some tips on how to use asking in our prayers:

• Be specific in what you ask for.
• Express your needs clearly and openly.
• Thank God for what He has already done, as well as for what you are asking.
• Remind yourself that God is listening and cares about your requests.
• Ask in faith without doubting.
• Ensure your “ask” aligns with God’s will and doesn’t go against scripture!

A sample prayer of asking:

Lord, I come to You with my needs, struggles, and worries [humbly state them]. I come to You asking for Your help and guidance in this season of my life. Please provide me with the strength and courage that I need to face these challenges. Please show me the way forward and fill my heart with peace, knowing You are here with me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

4. Yield

The final step in the P.R.A.Y acronym is Yield.

This is an important step of submission, allowing God to answer your prayers His way, not yours.

Believers should surrender control of their lives to Him, trusting that He knows best and will ultimately provide what you need.

Yielding is a crucial part of prayer; it is an opportunity to surrender our will to God’s will.

Here are five verses about yielding:

1. Romans 12:1-2 – “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
2. Psalm 37:5 – “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.”
3. Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
4. John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
5. James 4:7 – “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Here are some tips on how to use yielding in our prayers:

• Give up control and allow God to take charge of your life.
• Trust God even when things don’t make sense.
• Ask God for strength and courage in the face of adversity.
• Surrender your will to His and accept He knows what is best for you.
• Allow yourself to be transformed by His word and love.
• Yield with a transformed mind, not with a pattern of this world!

A sample prayer of yielding:

Lord, I come to You with an open heart and mind. I surrender my will to Yours and yield to Your guidance and direction in all aspects of my life. Please help me trust in You even when things don’t make sense. Help me to accept that You know what is best for me, and give me the strength and courage to follow Your path. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Who should use the P.R.AY prayer acronym?

I believe that no matter who you are or what stage of your faith journey you’re in, the P.R.AY acronym can be an incredibly beneficial tool for deepening your faith and understanding of God’s Word.

However, here are some people who I think would incredibly benefit from this acronym:

a) New Believers:

The P.R.AY prayer acronym is excellent for new believers who are just getting started with their faith journey.

This acronym serves as a helpful reminder of the types of prayers we should be offering up to God each day.

b) Consistent Prayer:

Those who are looking to be more consistent in their prayer life can also benefit from the P.R.AY acronym.

It enables one to jumpstart their prayer life by having a structure to follow and helps them stay focused on God’s Word and will for our lives.

P.S. As you mature, you will NOT depend on this (acronyms) for consistent prayer! One will have a hunger and yearning to pray consistently!

c) Growing Faith:

Those who are seeking to grow in their faith can use the P.R.AY acronym as a tool for reflection and growth.

This acronym serves as a reminder of how we should approach our prayers, allowing us to draw closer to God and deepen our understanding of His will for our lives.

d) Difficult Situations:

Under difficult or challenging situations, the P.R.AY acronym can be used as a reminder to stay focused on God and trust in His plan, even when it’s hard to understand why certain things are happening.

This acronym allows us to renew our faith and draw strength from God’s Word when times get tough.

e) Personal Reflection:

For moments of personal reflection or spiritual guidance, the P.R.AY acronym can be a great reminder of how to approach prayer and what we should focus on when we pray.

This acronym allows us to pause and therefore draw closer to God by recognizing His greatness and faithfulness in our lives.

f) Guidance for Others:

Those who are looking for guidance in helping others through prayer can also benefit from the P.R.AY acronym.

I imagine Bible leaders using this to teach new believers a simple way to get started with prayer!

g) Spiritual Growth:

At times, people may seek to switch things up (prayer strategies) and deepen their faith and grow spiritually. These individuals may feel inspired to explore different ways to grow in prayer. They can use the P.R.AY acronym as a tool for reflection and spiritual growth.

8 Do’s and Don’ts of Mnemonic Phrases and Prayer Acronyms

Here are some things to remember about mnemonic phrases and acronyms…

1. Remain Spirit-Led: Don’t be too structured and fail to be spirit led. Start by consulting God before attempting to use a mnemonic acronym and ask for guidance in your prayer time, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you on the right path.
2. Research its Meaning: Make sure you understand an acronym’s true meaning before using it. Dig a little deeper and explore the origin of the phrase so that you can get a better understanding of its purpose.
3. Avoid Overuse: Don’t overuse mnemonic acronyms or rely too heavily on them to express your faith. While these are powerful tools, they should be used sparingly in order to ensure that the full meaning of the phrase doesn’t get lost.
4. Point to Jesus: Use mnemonic acronyms as reminders to always point back to Jesus and His will for your life. These acronyms should be used to help us grow closer to Him, not simply as a way of remembering information.
5. Be Creative: Get creative with your mnemonic acronyms. Try making up your own or coming up with a new way to remember an acronym you’ve already used. This will help keep things fresh and exciting as well as deepen your faith.
6. Seek Inspiration: Don’t be afraid to seek inspiration from the Bible or other Christian literature when working on a mnemonic acronym. This will help you come up with phrases that are meaningful and relevant to your faith journey.
7. Share Your Ideas: Once you’ve developed a mnemonic acronym, don’t be afraid to share it with others! You never know what kind of impact it might have on someone else’s life.
8. Pray and Reflect: Lastly, use mnemonic acronyms as reminders to reflect on the Word of God each day prayerfully. This will help us stay focused and grounded in our faith journey.
