Powerful Prayer for Revival and Spiritual Awakening + Prayer Points

This post is all about  prayer for revival and spiritual awakening

I’m so humbled that you are here to read more on prayer for revival!

Let’s start with a quick explanation of what we will discuss!

Here goes…

Revival and spiritual awakening is a period of spiritual renewal where individuals or communities experience an intensification of their relationship with God. During such times, Christians may go through a new level of commitment to the Lord, and revival can lead to many positive outcomes.

I review important pieces in this in-depth post to help us understand the need for revival. It also has two sample prayers and prayer points that will help us!

Ready? Let’s go!

Revival from an all-girls boarding school in Kenya!

I’m a storyteller, so I can’t help but squeeze this story in here. It’s super relevant…and interesting!

In the early ’90s, my father purchased our family home near Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). He bought the house for two reasons- it was near a Pentecostal church and a library, LOL. When we moved in, we soon realized we could hear all the action happening at Uhuru Park, which was basically ground zero for crusades in Kenya. P.S. Uhuru in Swahili means Freedom!!

Anyways, when a crusade would be ongoing, we couldn’t even watch TV in the house; it was that loud and, at times, intrusive, but we became accustomed to always being the default “plus one” to every crusade.

One of the most moving crusades was when Benny Hinn came to Kenya. We could sense a shift in the atmosphere, and we could hear his voice loud and clear from our home. I remember my older cousin returning from the crusade with Benny Hinn’s book, “Good morning Holy Spirit.” That has been one of my favorite books because it reminds me of the Spiritual shift I experienced.

Fast forward, I’m a teenager in an all-girls boarding school that loved to worship. We certainly didn’t have all the right answers or doctrines (we were children). However, we knew how to shift the atmosphere. We learned how to worship in Spirit and truth. I remember the Bible Study Leaders (I was one of them) and Christian Union leaders would spend one hour praying and sanctifying the dining hall that doubled up as our church. We began to worship passionately, and the Holy Spirit came powerfully into our midst.

I remember my first experience of the tangible presence of God was when we were in prayer and worship, and we heard and felt a rushing wind. Every person fell flat on the floor, and we were all overcome by the Spirit of God. We were teenagers! We didn’t do anything spectacular…we just had a hunger for God.

The revival was full of miracles and healing! People were baptized by the fire of the Holy Spirit, received prophecies, began talking in their heavenly language, were delivered from demonic bondage, and were set free. To date, nobody can convince me that the same God that was in the Upper Room doesn’t exist!

The revivals and crusades I experienced were life-changing and pivotal in my life. I will never forget the power of the experiences and how they opened my eyes to a new level of understanding about the living God who desires to pour out His love on us. I’m forever changed, and I am grateful for the opportunity I had to experience it.

Biblical examples of revival

The Bible provides numerous examples of revivals throughout its pages. In the book of Acts, the early church experienced one of the most powerful and far-reaching revivals in history. This revival began with Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ disciples, giving them the power to preach boldly about Christ’s death and resurrection (Acts 2:1-4). As they preached, thousands were converted as a result – demonstrating that revival can occur even during times of persecution.

Another example of a spiritual awakening is found in the life of Solomon. After years of idolatry and spiritual apathy, he humbled himself before God and was granted a fresh vision for the future (2 Chronicles 7:14-15). His repentance and dedication to the Lord led to a renewal throughout Israel – bringing them back into fellowship with their Creator. But Solomon’s story is rather complicated; I touched on him briefly in my post on discernment. Perhaps I will revisit this story in-depth much later.

Finally, we see an example of revival during Elijah’s ministry. As he preached boldly against apostasy, many turned away from false gods and devoted themselves to following God (1 Kings 18:36-39). This period of spiritual transformation demonstrates what happens when people turn away from sin and embrace holiness – leading to a genuine revival in their lives.

These are just a few examples of revival and spiritual awakening that can be found throughout the Bible. From these stories, we learn that even during times of despair and darkness, God can work miraculously to bring about renewal and transformation for His people. However, I recognize that we must be obedient and diligent to ensure that the revival doesn’t die. We have to set structures to ensure we experience lasting effects!

I pray that God will continue to move in this way today, pouring out His Spirit on all who seek Him!

More modern revival examples

These are just a few of the many revivals that have occurred throughout history. Each revival has its unique story and significance, but one thing is certain: revivals have profoundly impacted the Christian faith and will continue to shape it for generations to come.

This is by no means an exhaustive list…but I thought I should share it as it gives us an idea of what to expect in a revival.

a)The great awakening (1730s – 1740s):

This revival was a series of Christian revivals that occurred in the American colonies during the mid to late 1700s. It began in New England and spread throughout the colonies. This revival was characterized by an intense religious fervor that impacted religious thought in the colonies. It was led by preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, both well-known for their fiery preaching styles. The revivals of this era played a role in laying the foundation for the American Revolution and the United States of America.

b) Azusa street revival (1906 – 1908):

The Azusa Street Revival was a major event in American revivalism’s history and helped spread Pentecostalism around the world. This revival occurred in Los Angeles, California. It was led by William Seymour and became the center of Pentecostalism, a movement characterized by the belief in speaking in tongues and other charismatic practices. Thousands of people poured into Los Angeles to attend the revival and were enthralled by the performances, including singing, shouting, dancing, and speaking in tongues.

c) Hebrides revival (1949 – 1952):

This revival occurred in the United Kingdom, primarily on Scotland’s Hebridean, Argyll, and Lewis islands. It was sparked by the preaching of Reverend Duncan Campbell and featured powerful manifestations of the Holy Spirit, including weeping, trembling, falling down, and speaking in tongues. It quickly spread throughout the islands, transforming lives and resulting in an increase in church attendance. This revival is often viewed as a revival of the heart and soul and a precursor to the charismatic movement.

d) Toronto blessing (1994 – 1995):

This revival occurred in Toronto, Canada, and was characterized by an atmosphere of joy and laughter. It attracted thousands of people from all over the world who came to experience manifestations of the Holy Spirit, including laughter, speaking in tongues, and physical healing. The revival is widely regarded as a major event in the history of Pentecostalism and has served as an inspiration for other revivals around the world.

P.S. I recently found two websites- namely: “Apostolic archives” and Revival library, which have both done a remarkable job of compiling more information on numerous historical events. They have photos, newspaper articles, etc. I honestly applaud the work that they have done to preserve our Spiritual history.

Ministry of Holy Spirit in prayer for revival

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is integral to any revival or spiritual awakening. The work of the Spirit is to convict people’s hearts of sin, to reveal the truth from Scripture, and to empower believers for service in God’s kingdom. The Holy Spirit is the source of life, peace, joy, and transformation. Without the work of the Spirit, there is no revival.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is also necessary for spiritual awakening today. The Spirit takes an active role in leading people to faith in Jesus Christ and motivating them to live lives of obedience. He also gives believers spiritual discernment, understanding, and power for service. Without the ministry of the Spirit, we would not be able to experience the fullness of a spiritual awakening.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is also essential for our own personal spiritual growth. He is the Comforter and Counselor who helps us to understand God’s will for our lives. The Spirit empowers us to overcome sin and to live holy lives that are pleasing to God. Without the ministry of the Spirit, we would be unable to experience the fullness of life in Christ.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is indispensable for revival and spiritual awakening. We must actively seek His presence and be willing to submit to His will if we want to experience a deep and lasting spiritual awakening. When the Spirit moves, hearts will be transformed, and lives will be changed forever. Therefore, we must never forget the importance of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in a revival or spiritual awakening. May God grant us the grace to be open and obedient to His work in our lives.

8 powerful prayer points for revival and spiritual awakening

prayer points for revival

We all know that times are tough and people are struggling. But as Christians, we also know that God is still on the throne, and He is sovereign over all.

As we continue to pray for revival and spiritual awakening, here are 8 in-depth prayer points based on scripture that you can use.

Let’s keep praying and believing for a mighty move of God in our country and around the world!

1. A hunger for God – Psalm 42:1-2

Is it possible to have an insatiable hunger for God? Psalm 42:1-2 speaks of a deep longing within the soul to seek out the Living God. It is a quest that can often be difficult to satisfy. We yearn for more of His presence and seek out encounters with Him through prayer, fasting, worship, and reading the Word. Our hearts begin to long for more of His love and grace, which results in a craving that nothing else can truly quench.

As our relationship with God grows stronger, so does our spiritual appetite, which leaves us longing and unsatisfied until that ultimate reunion with the Father when we see Jesus face-to-face!

2. Repentance – Acts 3:19

Repentance is a widely-discussed topic in the Bible, especially in Acts 3:19, which reads: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.”

This passage calls us to turn away from our sins and focus on God so He can bring us into His kingdom. Repentance involves confessing sinful thoughts and behaviors to God while making changes to our lifestyle that reflect His will. Additionally, it means dedicating ourselves to following Him and His laws. Ultimately, we are called to repent so that we can have our sins forgiven and receive everlasting life through Jesus Christ.

3. Forgiveness – Matthew 6:12

The Bible has much to say about forgiveness, with one of the most notable teachings being in the form of a moral instruction from Jesus in Matthew 6:12: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

From this simple demand, we are reminded that forgiveness is essential to our relationship with God and others. When we withhold forgiveness, it burdens us more than anyone else. In order to truly show love and grace to those around us, unconditional forgiveness is necessary. Forgiveness creates peace of mind and leads us toward a more purposeful life. It allows us to move past difficult situations and recognize the beauty of each day.

4. Unity – John 17:20-21

Unity is an incredibly important part of faith, as depicted in John 17:20-21. Jesus acknowledges that for believers to be unified and truly part of God’s kingdom, they must be one, as He and the Father are one.

While we may have different beliefs and opinions, unity provides a safe and harmonious place to rest in our faith through love. Unity is fostered through open dialogue, understanding each other’s perspectives, and loving one another without judgment despite our differences. True unity is only found when individuals strive towards a deeper understanding of God’s word as well as our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. By unifying with each other and recognizing our shared faith in Christ, we can become stronger together than apart.

5. Faithfulness – Revelation 2:10

In the book of Revelation, Jesus praises the Church of Thyatira for their great faithfulness despite the false teachings they were exposed to. He encouraged them to “be faithful until death” (Revelation 2:10), giving them hope and courage to continue in faith.

Similarly, we should remain faithful through any disappointment or discouragement on our journey. A life lived faithfully is one of dedication and trust in whatever circumstances may arise – trusting God to reveal his greater plan ultimately. From simple gestures of kindness to other more profound gestures, faithfulness can come in many forms and sizes, but it has a lasting impact when it comes from the heart. Let us embrace the challenge to live faithfully today.

6. Holiness – 1 Peter 1:15-16

Holiness is an essential aspect of our spiritual lifeline, as beautifully demonstrated in 1 Peter 1:15-16. It reminds us that we must conduct ourselves in a manner like God and remain obedient to Him. To be holy is a transformative process from being devoted to one’s own selfish desires, often becoming corrupt and seeped into a state of apathy or moral bankruptcy.

It takes great courage to let go of these influences and seek to become sanctified in God’s sight. Through faith-filled prayer for guidance, self-reflection, and willing hearts, Christian followers can adhere to instructions found in His Word that will empower them to continue their quest for holiness, using whatever it may take – within reason – to create a closer bond with Him.

7. Healing- Psalm 103:2-3

Healing is also a major aspect of holiness and spiritual growth. As we seek to be more like God, we must remember that He desires for us to lead healthier lives in every sense of the word. This involves healing from emotional wounds, physical ailments, and spiritual sins.

With His help, we can receive strength and peace to overcome whatever obstacles stand in our way and take steps toward living out the life He intended for us. Holiness is the call to pursue wholeness even when times are tough, knowing He will offer comfort along the journey.

8. Comfort- Psalm 145:18

A comforting reminder that God will never leave us alone can be found in Psalm 145:18 – “The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth.” We can rest assured knowing that He will always be there when we need Him and strive to live out a life pleasing unto Him. Even in our darkest moments, He is ready to pick us up and guide us along the path of holiness.

Sample 1: prayer for revival and spiritual awakening

Heavenly Father, in these days of great darkness and spiritual barrenness, we come to You in earnest prayer, asking that You would move upon the hearts of Your people with a fresh outpouring of Your Spirit. We recognize our need for revival and spiritual awakening—and we ask that You would grant us this request according to Your will and perfect timing.

Our prayer is that revival that causes us to turn from our own ways and be obedient to Your Word; one where we are humbled by your love and grace, broken before you in repentance, purged from all envy, strife and sin; one that turns hearts back towards You and away from the world’s vain promises. We know that Your arms are open wide to all who come in repentance and humility – that You will freely pardon, forgive, embrace and love us.

May this revival bring about a spiritual awakening that causes us to truly seek first Your kingdom and its righteousness, one that renews our hearts and minds with an increased appetite for the things of God—a longing for holiness, purity, and truth. May it be a revival where we experience fresh encounters with You—one that brings supernatural signs, wonders, and miracles in Your name.

We pray for true revival: one marked by the conviction of sin, confession of faithfulness, repentance from evil deeds, obedience to Your Word, one that results in genuine praise and honor given only to You. Let the revival begin in our hearts, spread to the rest of Your church, and eventually encompass this world.

We cling to the promise given by Isaiah: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).

We thank You for hearing our prayer and ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Sample 2: prayer for revival and spiritual awakening

Heavenly Father, you graciously promised that when Your people humble themselves, pray and seek Your face, You will hear them from heaven. Thank You for this promise as we turn our eyes toward You in prayer today.

We ask that in these days of darkness – when there is a shortage of spiritual knowledge and understanding – You would forgive us for our neglect of seeking after Your truth. We pray that You would awaken us to the beauty of Your truth so that we may live according to it with renewed vigor and passion. May this awakening cause us to be filled with an unquenchable thirst for more knowledge about You and Your Word.

We ask for a spiritual awakening that causes us to be filled with love for You, our fellow believers, and all mankind—that we would reflect Your unconditional love in all that we do. May this revival cause us to unify as one body – loving one another and serving each other in humility and compassion. We pray that it will break down the walls of divisiveness among us so that together we can advance Your kingdom on earth even further.

Grant us the grace to walk out this revival by putting off our old selves with its sinful habits and selfish desires and instead put on the new self created in holiness according to Your perfect will (Ephesians 4:22-24). May we receive Your Spirit afresh, and devote to leading lives that bring honor and glory to Your name.

Thank You for hearing our prayer and ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

And that’s it, folks, prayer for revival and spiritual awakening

In conclusion, revival and spiritual awakening are powerful movements of God that can bring restoration, renewal, and transformation to our lives. We see evidence of this in the Bible, and it is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His people. May we all be willing to humble ourselves before the Lord and seek His revival in our hearts, church, families, and communities!
