What is intercessory prayer?

Intercessory prayer is a powerful way to help those in need. When we pray for others, we ask God to intercede on their behalf. We ask Him to intervene in their lives and help them in whatever situation they may face. Intercessory prayer can be used for the sick, the suffering, and the persecuted.

In essence, it is a way for us to stand in the gap and plead with God on behalf of someone else.

As per the title of this post, we are focusing on intercession for nations.

Why I’m writing this post

I’m writing this post because our intercession group is praying for upcoming elections for several countries worldwide.

Quick backstory: I come from Kenya, and I’ve personally witnessed the ills of election turmoil. I briefly wrote about this in my “Prayer for Protection Psalm 91“post.

Kenya is also surrounded by countries that have experienced instability. Therefore, many refugees during the ’90s re-settled in Kenya and made it their home. Growing up, I remember being in class with students who had witnessed the unimaginable.

So, in short, I understand the urgency and importance of prayer warriors.

This blog post was birthed from much prayer, reflection, and research. It’s really practical, and I personally use it. I’m so happy to share this with you.

Reasons why you should pray for the nations

In this section, I will talk about the importance of intercessory prayers.

In other words, I will be answering the question, “Why is intercessory prayer so important?”

  • Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons we have against the forces of evil. It gives us a way to communicate with God directly and intercede on behalf of others.
  • When we pray for nations, we are asking God to intervene on behalf of those who are suffering. We ask Him to bring healing, peace, and justice to a broken world.
  • Prayer is a way for us to stand in solidarity with those who are struggling. It is a way for us to show our support and let them know we are thinking of them.
  • Prayer can be a powerful tool for change. It has the ability to transform hearts and minds, and it can bring about real change in the world.
  • Praying for nations is one of the most important things we can do as Christians. It is our opportunity to make a difference in the world and be a part of God’s plan for redemption.
  • Intercessory prayers for nations are so important because they give us the chance to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. They give us the opportunity to join with God in His work of restoring creation.
  •  Intercessory prayers for nations are one way that we can be salt and light in a dark and broken world.

So let us take advantage of this opportunity, and let us pray for the nations of the world.

Prayer for a nation in crisis

prayer for a nation in crisis

When a nation is in crisis, it can feel like the weight of the world is on our shoulders. We may not know what to do or where to turn. This is when we need to intercede for our nation prayerfully.

These verses give us hope that God is close to those who are suffering. He is a good Father who loves his children and desires to see them healed and whole. He hears our prayers and he will answer them. So let us continue to intercede for those who are in need, and trust that God will do what only he can do.

Key Bible Verses when praying for a nation in crisis

Let’s look at some quick scripture:

Scripture tells us in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” This is a promise we can stand on when our nation is in crisis. We can know that God is with us, and He will see us through this difficult time.

Another key verse to remember when interceding for our nation is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God has good plans for our nation! We can trust Him in the midst of crisis.

We see in Isaiah 40:31 that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” When we put our hope in God, He will give us the strength we need to get through this time. We can trust Him to carry us through.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” – Psalm 147:3

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” – 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
