7 Essential Steps for Breaking Generational Curses

This post is all about breaking generational curses

Do you feel like you are stuck in a cycle of sin and don’t know how to break free? Are you tired of seeing the same problems plague your family over and over again? If so, you may be suffering from a generational curse.

In this post, I will be discussing generational curses- what they are, how to identify them, and most importantly, how to break them.

May God bless you as you read this post and may He set you free from the bondage of sin!

Why I’m writing this post

I’m from Kenya, East Africa. Being that I’m African, I know that many people struggle with this very issue. Prior to Christianity coming to Africa by way of missionaries, lots of traditional practices and rituals dominated culture.

I know many people who actively seek spiritual help in an attempt to become the shift in their particular generational.

I pray for your discernment and spiritual eyes to be opened concerning this topic.

Since this is a very sensitive topic, I will not go in-depth, but I will give enough information for you to have a good understanding. With that, I hope and pray that you will be able to continue in your search and quest.

What is a generational curse?

A generational curse is a curse that is passed down from one generation to the next. It can be caused by sin or disobedience.

Fact: There are chains of sin that we can inherit from our parents and grandparents. These chains can bind us and keep us from living the life God has for us.

Bible verse

Generational curses are mentioned throughout the Bible. Let’s look at one key verse:

You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Exodus 20:4-6

This is why breaking the cycle of sin in our families is so important. If we don’t, our children will suffer for our mistakes.

Spiritual law and jurisdiction

Ok, so this is a topic that I will speak about briefly. I have researched this topic, watched many videos, and read the word. It’s such a complex topic that it probably needs a whole blog post.

Here is a brief overview:

Spiritual laws are the laws that govern the spiritual realm. There are many different spiritual laws, for example, the law of sowing and reaping. This law states that whatever a person sows, they will reap. If a person sows sin, they will reap death. However, if a person sows righteousness, they will reap life.

The devil is the accuser of the brethren.

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Revelation 12:10

So what does the devil do? He uses spiritual laws to enforce generational curses. If you think about how the law system is here on earth, picture the devil using the spiritual law to find out what is legally binding. It’s the same concept.

The good news is that we, as Christians, have been given spiritual authority to break free from generational curses.

In Ephesians, Paul tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. He goes on to say that we are to put on the full armor of God so that we can take our stand against the devil’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:12)

One of the main ways that we can take our stand against the devil is by understanding spiritual jurisdiction and spiritual laws. Spiritual jurisdiction is the area in which a spiritual being has authority.

Signs of generational curses

There are many signs that you may be under a generational curse.

Here are a few:

  • A feeling of hopelessness or despair.
  • A sense of being trapped or stuck in life.
  • A feeling that no matter what you do, you can’t break free from the cycle of sin.
  • Repeated failures in relationships, career, or finances.
  • A pattern of addictions, bondage or destructive behaviors in your family.
  • A pattern of sinful behavior that seems impossible to break.
  • A feeling of being cursed or discriminated against.
  • A feeling of constant rejection or abandonment.

If you are experiencing any of these signs, it is crucial to take action. You can also seek help from a pastor, counselor, or trusted friend. They can pray with you and help you break free from sin’s chains.

Importance of deliverance ministry

There is a lot of talk in the Body of Christ about deliverance ministry. This is primarily because it is such an important ministry. Deliverance ministry is the act of setting people free from bondage, oppression, and spiritual captivity. It is a powerful ministry that can free people from years of generational bondage and sin.

Many scriptures talk about the importance of deliverance ministry. Let’s look at one:

“When an evil spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first.”

Matthew 12:43-45

This scripture is very clear about the importance of deliverance ministry. If we do not have good deliverance ministry and teachings in our churches, one will not realize the importance of obedience and “keeping the house clean.” This is a critical component of deliverance ministry in churches- continued nourishing of the flock so they can stay alert. What happens if someone slacks? The enemy will return with seven more evil spirits, and the person will be in a worse condition than before.

Another scripture that talks about the importance of deliverance ministry is Luke 13:11-13. In this scripture, Jesus heals a woman who has been bound by Satan for eighteen years. He says to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” He then lays his hands on her and she is immediately healed. This scripture shows us the power of deliverance ministry. It can set people free from years of bondage and oppression.

Importance of dreams for revelation

Dreams are one of the ways God speaks to us. They can be a warning, a prophetic word, or even just a creative way for God to get our attention. In the Bible, there are many examples of people having significant dreams that changed the course of their lives or someone else’s life. Joseph had a dream that his brothers would bow down to him, and it ended up coming true (Genesis 37).

Some people think that you only have dreams when you’re asleep, but that’s not true. You can have “daydreams” or “waking visions” while you’re wide awake. These kinds of dreams are usually from the Holy Spirit and are often prophetic in nature.

Dreams can be a powerful tool that God uses to break us out of our current situations and circumstances. Whether you’re asleep or awake, if you have a dream that you feel is from God, it’s important to pay attention to it and pray about it. If you’re in a place of spiritual bondage, or if you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, ask God to send you a dream that will give you direction and hope.

If you have a dream that seems to be from the enemy, don’t panic. Remember that we have the power and authority to break every chain and curse in our lives. We can bind the enemy’s power in Jesus’ name and declare freedom over our lives.

7 Essential Steps for Breaking Generational Curses

5 types of generational curses

There are many ways to break free from a generational curse.

Here are seven (they are in no particular order):

1. Prayer and fasting

Prayer and fasting are essential keys to breaking generational curses.

In Matthew 17:21, Jesus said, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”

Fasting breaks the stronghold of the enemy in our lives. When we deny ourselves food, it weakens our flesh and allows the Holy Spirit to have more control. The enemy does not like this because he knows his power is broken when we fast.

2. Binding and loosing

Binding and loosing are also important keys to breaking generational curses.

In Matthew 16:19, Jesus said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

When we bind something, we are putting a spiritual embargo on it. We are forbidding it to operate in our lives. When we loose something, we are releasing it from the bondage that it has been under.

3. Confession and repentance

Confession and repentance are also important keys to breaking generational curses.

In James 5:16, we are told, “Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

We need to confess our sins not only to God but also to someone who can pray for us and help us to repent. Generational curses cannot be broken without confession and repentance.

4. Renouncing the curse and sin

Renouncing the curse means rejecting it and declaring that it has no power over us. We do this by speaking out loud and declaring that we are no longer under the curse of generational sin.

Renouncing the sin means that we turn away from it and reject it as part of our lives. We repent of the sin and ask God to forgive us. We also ask Him to help us turn away from the sin and live a life that is pleasing to Him.

Break the cycle of sin means that you make a conscious decision to break the cycle of sin in your life. You can do this by making different choices than your parents or grandparents made.

5. Forgiveness

Forgiveness is an important part of breaking free from generational curses. We need to forgive those who have hurt us in order to be set free from the pain they have caused.

6. Cut demonic influence & break soul ties

Breaking soul ties means that we sever any spiritual connection with the people or things associated with the generational curse. This includes anything from family members to objects.

Cutting off demonic influence means removing anything in our lives that gives the enemy a foothold. This includes things like drugs, alcohol, pornography, and anything else that is not of God.

7. Read the Bible & claim your inheritance

Claim your inheritance means you claim God’s promises for your life. He has promised to bless us and give us life abundantly. We can claim these promises by faith.

By taking these steps, we can break the generational curses that have been holding us back. We can live lives that are free from the bondage of sin and full of the joy and peace that comes from walking with God.

Bottomline- Generational curses are real, and they need to be dealt with in order to break free from them.

And that’s it, folks, tips for breaking generational curses!

Generational curses are real, but so is the power of God. With Him, we can overcome any curse. So don’t give up hope! Trust in the Lord and lean on His strength as you walk through this difficult journey. He will never leave you or forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:6)

As discussed earlier, there is hope! There are ways that you can break the chains of sin in your life and begin to experience freedom in Christ.

  1. I really like how much effort you put into your writing. There are indeed patterns and addictions that run through generations and it takes the power of the Spirit to be freed from it. Being freed is one thing, to stay freed needs one to abide in the Lord so the enemy will not find room to get a foot in.

    • Zinhle, thank you so much for your message! It is super normal to have bad dreams when you are fasting. It’s because you are breaking evil covenants and altars. I know “Kevin L.A Ewing” talks more about this and I recommend you watch his channel on this topic of dreams because he is very anointed in this area! You shall overcome in Jesus name!! God bless you my sister!
