Why I’m writing on Bible emergency numbers (storytime)
I found an old, worn-out Bible in my father’s nightstand drawer when I was eight.
The Bible had a unique design on its cover that caught my eye – it was the “Gideon” Bible. The Gideon Bible is a special edition of the New Testament, which has been distributed across the world by members of the Gideons International organization.
The Bible itself was pretty small and simple, with a green leather cover and gold writing spelling out the words “Gideon” across it.
I was particularly impressed with one feature in particular. On the back of the Bible were pages with helpful verses that could be used in times of worry, anxiety, or difficulty. It essentially functioned as an emergency phone book🤗 for Christians. This Bible gave me much comfort when I was trying to understand the scriptures.
Why was finding such a gem with a cheatsheet of this kind super important? LOL
Well, this was before the internet revolution, and so having this physical copy of the Bible with a list of useful scriptures was invaluable.
It truly was a special Bible – one that provided guidance and comfort when I needed it most. It also helped me overcome challenges in high school (boarding).
P.S. I later learned that almost every Christian household in Kenya had a few copies of the Gideon Bible. LOL. Hats off to the missionaries who were diligent in spreading this word.
Hence this blog post is a way for me to pay it forward!
This is a special cheatsheet I created, from me to you!
