Experiences from our past that haunt us are often the topic of conversation when an enemy confronts us with evil intent.
These experiences sway how we respond to certain situations; some of them can even trigger levels of fear that reach far beyond what is reasonable.
At this point, one can lack the words to pray or simply feel helpless and at a loss. This is why the Psalms are so powerful during these times.

The Psalm begins with a plea for God’s help. “Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me” (Psalm 35:1).
As the Psalm progresses, it calls out enemies for their false accusations and lies, asking God to intervene: “Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life” (Psalm 35:26).

2. Psalm 83: Praying for deliverance from the schemes of wicked people.
Sometimes it can feel like the world is against us and we are surrounded by evil.
Psalm 83 speaks to this situation, pleading for deliverance from wicked people who scheme and conspire against us. Verse 3 states, “With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish.”
Let’s backtrack real quick…the Psalm begins with a petition for the Lord to hear and act on the complaints of His people: “O God, do not remain quiet; do not be silent and, O God, do not be still” (Psalm 83:1).
Later in the Psalm, it pleads for Him to intervene and save His people from these enemies: “Fill their faces with shame so that they may seek your name, O Lord” (Psalm 83:16).
The Psalm ends on a note of confidence in God’s power, knowing He will fight for us when needed: “Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord, are alone the Most High over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18).
Overall, Psalm 83 is a prayer of trust that God will save us from our enemies. No matter what hardships we face or how outnumbered and outmatched we may feel, we can take comfort in knowing that God will fight for us if we pray. He is the Most High over all the earth, and His power will prevail in any situation. We can trust in Him to deliver us from our enemies and answer our prayers.
3. Psalm 4: Prayer for help! Seeking refuge in the Lord and trusting Him to protect against enemies.
Psalm 4 is a prayer for help in times of distress when one feels overwhelmed and helpless.
The Psalm is also thought to have been written during a time of mourning or lamenting, which every believer experiences at some point in their life.
The main point of this Psalm is that God will always hear and answer our prayers when we pray them in faith with an open heart.
The Psalm starts by asking for help from the Lord, followed by a call for justice and deliverance from enemies (verses. 1-2).
David then promises to devote his life to the Lord and pledges obedience (verses. 3-5).
He then pleads for God’s mercy and deliverance from enemies, ending with a call for justice against them (verses. 6-8).
The verse that caught my attention is verse 1, which emphasizes the power of prayer: “Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”
4. Psalm 13: Expressing confidence in God and trust that He will answer prayer in times of trouble.
When we feel lost and alone, it can be hard to remember that God is still there for us.
Psalm 13 speaks to this by expressing a cry for comfort in times of distress.
The main theme throughout the Psalm is one of trust in God’s timing, knowing He will answer prayers in His perfect time.
The Psalm opens with a plea for respite from the hardships of life: “O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way?” (Psalm 13:1).
The author then expresses their faith: ” But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (Psalm 13:5).
Later, the Psalm ends with hope and joy that comes from trusting in the Lord: “I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13:6).
Overall, Psalm 13 is a prayer of trust that God will answer our prayers in His perfect time and timing. We can take comfort in knowing He hears and answers us, no matter what hardships come our way. Even if we feel forgotten, we can find joy and peace in trusting the Lord.

Psalm 54 starts first with a prayer of David to God, expressing his feelings of being mistreated by his enemies. He cries out for God to intervene, acknowledging that it is only through Him that justice will be served.
In verses 1-3, he begs for deliverance from his enemies and asks God to protect him from their malice. He pleads with God to hear his pleadings and grant him justice and to see the lies of the wicked that have been uttered against him.
Despite this, David confidently boasts in verse 4, “Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.”
Isn’t that powerful? It speaks of trusting in the Lord even when everything seems chaotic around us.
Later David expresses confidence in God’s protection, “You have delivered me from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.;” (verse 7).
We can rest assured that He will bring justice and grant us safety from those who seek to do us harm.
6. Psalm 91: The protection and guidance of God in times of distress.
This Psalm emphasizes the faithfulness of God and His power to protect those who love Him from any evil or danger.
Some scholars believe Moses wrote this Psalm, while others say David wrote it. Those who say it was Moses think that he wrote it when Israel was transitioning from slavery to freedom, and many feared the journey ahead.
One key verse that I love in this Psalm is verse 1 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” and Verse 15, “He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.”

Finally, David ends the Psalm with a prayer to bring honor to God’s name.
The central theme of this Psalm is that no matter the situation, we should always remember to give thanks and praise to God for His deliverance.
The verse I want to highlight is verse 46-48:
“The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted be God my Savior!
He is the God who avenges me,
who subdues nations under me,
who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.”
13. Psalm 68: May our enemies be scattered!

Ultimately, it encourages us to cast our burden upon the Lord and to rely on Him for strength during difficult times.
