15 Shocking Characteristics of the Leviathan Spirit | Leviathan in the Bible

This post is all about the Leviathan spirit

It’s easy to be intimidated by topics like the Leviathan Spirit. Why? Because they are considered too “out there” or “woo woo.”

However, how many topics have been given this label throughout history, but have since been accepted into mainstream conversations? i.e. sleep paralysis.

The truth is we live in a spiritual world. Our life isn’t only flesh and blood, per Ephesians 6:12.

I’m African and from a very traditional tribal background. Due to my culture, I am more open to such topics. However, I understand it can be difficult to open your mind to concepts you find strange or hard to believe. That’s why I’m inviting you to take a few moments to read and reflect on the information presented here.

Some may dismiss this as a strange or counter-cultural topic, so ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in all truth. However, I urge you to remain open-minded while reflecting upon the information presented. Who knows? You might just find something that helps bring clarity into your life. Or, you may find it like a rather interesting piece of fiction (LOL🤣, and that’s ok!).

So if you are willing to proceed… thank you for taking the time to explore this topic with me!

Ready? Let’s go!

African oral literature and other mythologies

Leviathan is one of the most iconic figures in both theology and mythology. It has a presence in ancient Greek, Mesopotamian, African, and Hebrew literature.

My tribe has a traditional oral story of Chemosi, a monster-like entity that was feared by many. This story has been passed down through generations. Each child in the tribe is given the story via oral literature at an early age. My dad told us of this story; I remember he even added sound effects and a tribal song to describe what it looked like. He used very intricate details to paint a picture of this creature. I recently spoke to a tribal grandma who told me that Chemosi was very believed to be very real and went into in-depth stories about it. So, in short- she was saying that it wasn’t a myth of fable- it was real.

This is not unique to my tribe, however; every culture around the world has its own version of this type of monster mythology. From Scotland’s Lockness Monster to Congo’s Mokele-Mbembe, stories like these have been told for centuries as a form of entertainment and cultural education.

We live in a spiritual world…

What makes these stories so powerful and lasting is that they remind us we live in a spiritual world. Why would every culture have the same variation of these stories? Even though many of us live in the modern, scientific world, these stories remind us that the Spiritual world is something bigger and more mysterious than we can see.

Therefore, the next time you hear such a story, don’t just dismiss it as fiction. Instead, please take a moment to consider its deeper meaning and what it says about our shared spiritual world.

P.S. Please read this article about the Mokele-Mbembe in Congo (not so fast- read after this blog post, LOL). This interesting article is by the Institute of Creation and Research. It talks of missionaries and locals who tell stories of their findings of this creature…in the recent past! (Insert dramatic music).

What does the Leviathan look like?

Ok, so by now, you are wondering when I will actually start this blog post. I’ve started with all kinds of mythologies. So my point was to let you know that the descriptions of these mythological creatures in the previous section are really similar to what the Bible describes as the Leviathan.

So, what does it look like? Let’s look at a few books…

a) Job’s definition of Leviathan Spirit

The Bible describes the Leviathan as an immense creature with a huge mouth and formidable teeth. Job chapter 41 says: “Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goes smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.” This passage paints a vivid picture of the monstrous size and power that this ancient creature possessed.

b) Psalms & Revelation’s definition of Leviathan Spirit

In Revelation 12:3, we read: “And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.” Christian theologians often interpret the dragon to represent the Leviathan – one of the most powerful creatures described in the Bible.

Psalm 74:14 speaks of “Leviathan being killed and its lifeblood poured out into the sea.”

c) The Talmud’s definition of Leviathan Spirit

The Talmud, a collection of rabbinical commentaries on the Torah and other ancient Jewish writings, also mentions Leviathan and another creature- Behemoth in passing. It states that “the sea trembled at its presence,” providing yet another image of a powerful creature.

In conclusion, the descriptions of Leviathan found in the book of Job, Revelation, and the Talmud all point to a massive creature with impressive power and strength – one that humanity has long feared and looked upon with “awe”. The physical traits of this Biblical monster have been deeply embedded into popular culture through literature, art, and film for centuries. With these scriptures as a guide, it is easy to see why this fearsome beast continues to inspire trepidation throughout modern society today.

The questions God asked Job concerning Leviathan

The questions God asked Job concerning Leviathan in the Book of Job 41 are some of the most profound verses in scripture. The Leviathan is a large sea creature described by God as something only He can control.

The questions He asked show us that even though this creature may seem huge and powerful, it is nothing compared to God’s power.

God asked Job 3 questions about Leviathan:

1. “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook?” (Job 41:1)  This question speaks to the power of God as He created Leviathan, a creature so big and powerful that mere humans could not control it.

2. “Can you put a rope in his nose?” (Job 41:2) God is showing us that His power is so great, He could even control Leviathan with a simple rope.

3. “Will he make many supplications to you? Will he speak to you soft words?” (Job 41:3) This speaks to the submission of Leviathan and its recognition of God’s power. Even though it is a powerful creature, Leviathan still bows before God’s might.

Why that these questions about the Leviathan mean…

These questions are important reminders of the power of God and His sovereignty over Creation. We should always be in awe of God’s might and recognize His authority and hierachy over all things. Even the mightiest of creatures are nothing compared to the power of the Almighty.

God’s questions to Job also remind us that no matter how tough our situation or how powerful our opposition may seem, we can trust in God for ultimate victory. He is still sovereign and has the power to overcome any obstacle. We have a sure and faithful God, and we can trust in Him for deliverance. We can trust in Him for ultimate victory, no matter how dire the circumstances may be.

Since we live in the end times, we may feel that the enemy has won in certain issues, but this is not the case. God has already given us victory; no matter what we face, He has already give us victory!

15 Characteristics of the Leviathan spirit

leviathan in job

If you have read my topic on the Jezebel spirit, I stress that it is crucial to understand the character in the Bible first to understand the spirit. The spirit carries similar attributes to the character.

In order to understand this Leviathan character, Job 41 physical characteristics can be reviewed. These characteristics are an enormous size, impenetrable skin, terrifying eyes, fiery breath, swift feet, roaring voice, sharp teeth, and mighty claws.

This creature seems to be part water-serpent and part land monster, a composite of multiple animals combined into one powerful being. The leviathan spirit embodies chaos and confusion and is ultimately defeated by God Himself.

Whether or not this being was intended to be interpreted literally or figuratively is up for debate, but either way provides insight into the nature of evil. Reviewing these characteristics can provide a better understanding of how to deal with this type of spirit if encountered.

1. Pride

The spirit of Leviathan is described in Job 41 as a proud creature, with its “back filled with rows of shields” that spark fear and awe in even the bravest men. It is this pride that drives it to control its domain and rise above all other creatures.

2. Fear and intimidation

Per Job’s description- Leviathan’s enormous size, impenetrable skin, roaring voice, sharp teeth, and mighty claws make it a force to be reckoned with, causing terror among those who encounter it.

Those who come into contact with the Leviathan Spirit understand one thing—fear and intimidation.

3. Control

The spirit of Leviathan does not take kindly when someone stands up against it. It will do whatever it takes to maintain its place of power and control, no matter if that means intimidation or violence.

4. Resilience

The Leviathan Spirit is nearly indestructible, with its impenetrable skin deflecting even the strongest weapons of man. It also has the ability to endure great pain and suffering, rarely letting any obstacle stand in its way for long.

5. Power

Not only is the Leviathan Spirit physically powerful, but it also holds a certain type of spiritual power over those who come into contact with it. This power makes them obey without question and submit to its rule without protest.

As believers we need to remain in the Spirit so that we don’t give into the demands and false power of the Leviathan.

6. Counterfeit majesty

Despite its strength and propensity for violence, the spirit of Leviathan is seen as majestic. Its fiery breath, swift feet, and terrifying eyes give it a certain character that cannot be ignored. However, let us understand that this is all counterfeit majesty that the Spirit will portray.

7. False authority

The Leviathan Spirit is perceived as the ultimate authority in its domain, reigning with an iron fist. It does not take kindly to those who challenge its rule and will do whatever it takes to maintain its place of power and control. Those who come into contact with this creature are sure to understand just how much authority it holds.

But…can I stress that none compares to our God- Elohim- Maker of Heaven and Earth!

8. Undeniable presence

The Leviathan in Job is painted as having a presence that is undeniable, from its enormous size to its fiery breath, swift feet, and sharp teeth.

Similarly, the Leviathan Spirit casts a wide and far-reaching shadow over all those who come into contact with it.

9. Seemingly unstoppable force

Despite any attempts made to stop or ward off the Leviathan Spirit, it appears to find a way to prevail—even if that means going through fire and water. This creature seemingly cannot be stopped, no matter how hard someone may try; its strength is too great for any mortal man or creature to contain or even begin to understand.

Again, this shows that as Christians we need to rely on God- our strength! We cannot fight spiritual battles with our humanly strength!

10. Chaos

The Leviathan Spirit brings chaos and destruction with it wherever it goes, disrupting whatever peace may exist in its wake. Its presence often incites fear and disorder among those who stand in its path, as few are willing to challenge this beast for very long.

11. Unquenchable Hunger

The Leviathan Spirit’s appetite is never satisfied, no matter how much it consumes. It is constantly on the hunt for more prey, devouring anything and everything in its path. This relentless hunger makes this creature even more dangerous and powerful, as it will never rest until it has claimed all that is within its reach.

12. Unparalleled Strength

The Leviathan Spirit is an apex predator with seemingly no equal when it comes to strength. Its mighty claws and sharp teeth can break through even the toughest of defenses, while its enormous size allows it to crush whatever stands in its way. There is nothing that can stop the Leviathan Spirit once it has set its sights on its goal; it will always emerge victorious in the end.

13. Cunningness

The Leviathan Spirit is a formidable opponent not only because of its immense physical strength but also because of its great cunningness. It is always one step ahead of its foes, outsmarting them at every turn.

This creature can anticipate its opponents’ moves and devise strategies. Therefore, Believers need to be totally dependent on God when it comes to this Spirit! God alone can give us divine strategy to navigate such a Spiritual battle.

14. Unyielding Determination

The Leviathan Spirit is relentless in its pursuit of dominance and will never give up until it has achieved its goals. This creature tries to outlast any obstacle with unyielding determination and will stop at nothing to reach the top.

15. Airwaves of Domination

The Leviathan Spirit is a force to be reckoned with, and it makes sure that everyone knows it. Through its fiery breath, roaring voice, and swift feet, the Leviathan Spirit sends out waves of domination and intimidation that reverberate throughout its domain.

Leviathan’s control and confusion via the airwaves

Thomas Hobbes’ work, Leviathan, examines the power of control in a world of confusion. According to Hobbes’ famous thesis, the only way to establish order in a chaotic world is to have an absolute power that governs all citizens. This idea is still very relevant and very much alive today, as we can see with fear tactics and manipulation being used to maintain control. The use of the power of airwaves can be an effective tool for maintaining control via manipulating public opinion.

The only way to break free from this control is by becoming conscious consumers of any information and actively questioning the messages we see around us. Critical thinking and using discernment (that comes from the Holy Spirit) are key. This will help ensure that our opinions are not being influenced by outside forces and allow us to form our own views on topics. If we can do this, we can break Leviathan’s chains and ensure that our voices are heard.

Difference between Jezebel and Leviathan Spirit and how they can operate together

The Leviathan and Jezebel spirits can often operate together in a person’s life and cause destruction.

The Leviathan spirit is more about pride, control, aggression, and greed which can lead to domination and control (over a person or entire nation). It is also associated with stubbornness and a desire for power, wealth, and fame.

On the other hand, the Jezebel spirit is much more focused on seduction, manipulation, deception, and witchcraft. It operates by manipulating people through charm or intimidation in order to gain control over them.

The two spirits can be powerful when they are combined as they create an atmosphere of fear, domination, and manipulation that causes others to submit to their will. This combination allows those who have been influenced by these spirits to be able to control and direct the lives of others.

The Bible speaks about a combination of spirits…

Let me quote two verses:

Luke 11:26 “Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”

Mark 5:1–5:13 “…When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!” For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!” Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name? “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area...”

In conclusion, the Leviathan spirit and the Jezebel spirit can often operate together and can combine their powers in order to manipulate, dominate and control people. Christians need to be aware of the dangers posed by this combination in order to protect themselves from falling into its traps.

Ultimately, these spirits can be cast out and defeated through prayer, fasting, and reliance on God’s infallible Word and strength.

And that’s it, folks, the Leviathan spirit

The Leviathan Spirit is seen one of the most powerful forces in biblical literature. It casts an undeniable presence over all those who come into contact with it and can seemingly never be stopped—no matter how hard someone may try. The Leviathan serves as a reminder that no creature or force has absolute control over us; only God can have the final say.

I want to stress the importance of studying and understanding these characteristics that I mentioned of the Leviathan Spirit. Ask yourself what they represent in our lives. Only by doing this, we can protect ourselves from being taken advantage of by demonic spirits or other forms of spiritual oppression. We must remember that God alone knows what is best for us! Furthermore- He will always be our shield and defender.

P.S. I encourage you to read my post titled, “The Complete Guide to Spiritual Warfare with the Armor of God!” which is a divine Spiritual Warfare blueprint based on Ephesians 6.

Glory be to God! 🎵

Revelation 19:6, “And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!”

    • Hello, thank you for your comment. I’m so glad that you took the time to write this.

First, I want to pause and acknowledge the depth and sensitivity of this comment.🙏🏿I want to let whoever is in this situation know that they are LOVED and WORTHY. It may be difficult to see beyond the noise- so I want to acknowledge that I see you and hear you! ❤️

Regarding Leviathan, I must acknowledge that it has a spiritual and mental element. So what you have highlighted is a true concern. I’m not a healthcare professional, so I would first say that it would be appropriate to reach out to a licensed professional for the mental health aspect of this. I’m a staunch advocate for mental health. However, I must admit I’m not qualified to provide advice in this area.❤️

The good news is that I know more churches spearhead mental health and, at times, provide counseling with a licensed and trained professional, offering classes, courses, and groups to walk through a healing journey. I know my church has really cool groups, and they incorporate the Clinical and Spiritual aspects of recovery and healing.

Secondly, I would pray for discernment. Discernment is key, and I wrote about this in-depth in the link I will provide.
      https://madeofstill.com/2022/10/08/gift-of-discernment/.

I believe my other posts on Spiritual Warfare would overlap here, but counseling and discernment are true anchors.

      Sending hugs and blessings ❤️
