What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, unease, or fear that can range from mild to severe. It is a normal stress reaction and can even be helpful in some situations. However, when anxiety becomes excessive, it may cause us distress or interfere with our daily activities like school or work.
Everyone experiences anxiety at some point, or its occasional bouts; it is a normal human emotion! Most of the time, we feel anxious before an important event such as taking exams or facing difficult situations like a job interview.
However, some people experience excessive anxiety or panic attacks which are not normal and can be very distressing.

Causes of anxiety/ What does the Bible say about fear?
Many things can cause anxiety, but fear is one of the most common sources. Fear can be caused by anything from an upcoming deadline at work to a family member who is ill. It has an element of uncertainty or unknown. When we are fearful, our bodies go into fight or flight mode and start producing all sorts of hormones that can make us feel anxious.
Satan is an author of fear, and if it were up to him, he would love for us to remain forever fearful. Why? Because he wants us to live in fear and fail to move boldly in our purpose. Fear and anxiety can manifest as negative thoughts that can be paralyzing.
When we are feeling anxious, it can be helpful to remember that God is with us and cares for us. The Bible verses provided later in this post can help remind us of this, and they can also give us strength during tough times. If you feel anxious, don’t hesitate to reach out to God for support. He will be there for you.
We also have to remember that in 1 Timothy 1:7, God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear!
Bible stories about fear and anxiety
Although some of the stories mentioned below don’t explicitly state “fear” or “anxiety,” I have provided a list of bible stories of people who faced challenges that can be equated to what many people are going through today. I believe it will offer lots of encouragement and inspiration.
Each of these biblical stories offers encouragement and hope that God is with us during our most challenging times. No matter how big our struggles may seem, we can find strength in Him. When we draw close to Him, He will show us His power and love.
1. Elijah and the prophets of Baal
When Elijah fled to Horeb, we are told he was running for his life as Queen Jezebel threatened to kill him. He found refuge by hiding in a cave and even remarked (verse 3-5) that he had enough! Elijah stated (verse 10) that he is the “only one left.” But even amid his fear, God spoke to him through a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12)
Elijah is just one example of how God can speak to us during our most challenging times. No matter how we’re feeling, God is always with us.
2. Disciples in a storm/ Jesus calms the storm
Biblical Reference: Matthew 8:24-25 & Mark 4:35-41
Jesus was sleeping in the back of a boat that strong waves had tossed about. His disciples woke him up and asked for help. They said, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” but Jesus simply said, “Peace! Be Still!” The wind died down, and everything became calm.
This is so reassuring that whether we are faced with internal or external storms, Jesus is capable of calming them.
3. Israelites surrounded by the enemy
Biblical Reference: Exodus 14:13 & Exodus 14
The Israelites were overcome by fear when they were surrounded by enemies (the Egyptians) who threatened them with death, but Moses told them not to be afraid, and this is the point where the Red Sea was parted, and the Israelites were able to cross safely.
This really reminds me of 1 Corinthians 10:13 where we are told that in trials and temptations, God will provide a way of escape in every situation.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
4. Saul pursues David
David is another example of a biblical man who overcame his fear. When Saul was pursuing him, we see that David asked for his Ephod and prayed to the almighty God for guidance. He later escaped and went on into the wilderness. When Saul took 3000 young men to hunt after him, he did not run away or give up. Instead, he talked with the King, and King Saul snapped out of it, the word says:
16When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17 “You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly…
1 Samuel 24: 16-17
This story tells us the importance of seeking God when gripped by fear. David’s immediate reaction was to pray and seek God and ask for direction.

Professional Help/ Christian Myths about Anxiety and Fear
In this section, I want to answer the following question, “Why don’t Christian’s address anxiety professionally?”
Christians sometimes don’t seek professional help with anxiety. Some myths that you see permeating church are as follows (especially from legalistic doctrines):
- Anxiety doesn’t exist
- It is punishment from God.
- Anxiety is a sign of weakness.
- Prayer alone is enough to combat anxiety.
Yes, Christianity is all about hope. However, sometimes when we are feeling down, hopeless, or anxious, the last thing we want to hear is that everything will “just” be okay. People don’t want to be overlooked and disregarded.. they definitely want to be heard!
This is when professional help can come in handy. I can tell you right now that I strongly advocate seeking professional help. I see no problem receiving wrap-around care to take care of your whole self i.e. spiritual, mental, psychological etc.
You are not alone in your struggles – others understand what you’re going through and can give you professional tools to navigate whatever you are going through.
