This post is about how to create a list of Christian Affirmations.
What is an Affirmation?
Before we start on the list of Christian Affirmations, lets understand what an affirmation is!
The word “Affirmation” comes from the root word “Affirm”. Let me also point out that Affirm is a verb (doing word) that means the following:
–State something as fact.
–Assert Strongly.
According to thesaurus.com, other synonyms are as follows: Declare, Profess, Assert.
Question: Are Christian Affirmations Biblical?
In the world today, there is a buzz about “manifesting,” “law of attraction,” and “affirmations.”
These affirmations are sometimes based on selfish ambitions and don’t necessarily align with God’s plan and purpose. For this reason, some Christians shy away from affirmations because it is seen as ungodly.
From my personal experience, I started using affirmations in 2018 when God began a radical shift in my life. I taped my list of affirmations in my bathroom and would say the affirmations backed by scripture. After saying the affirmations, I would read the corresponding scripture.
As I say this, I must admit that I am laughing right now because I would stare in the mirror, then point and enthusiastically say, “You are highly favored of God….” ! It got very comical when I said it. My non-verbal gestures were over the top. 😂.
The affirmations were very specific and targeted specific scriptures that I was standing on for that particular period of my life.
Friends, I can say that I did see a big difference in my life. The affirmations worked, but I have to state that it is because of the word of God that didn’t come back void. I applied biblical principles, and I believe I was aligned to God’s will for my life. I was fully yielded to Him.
My other encounter of affirmations is when my son attended a Christian daycare. The daycare would use affirmations in the morning since, at age 2, they hadn’t quite started memorizing the word of God yet. They would start their morning by declaring short conscience affirmations that had biblical backing. It was lovely seeing dozens of children boldly proclaiming, “I am a Child of God! I am blessed…etc.”
My Verdict on Christian Affirmations…
Therefore, from a Christian perspective, I would term that an affirmation as declaring the word of God. I would agree that it is biblical.
Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Ok….but this is the issue with affirmations
Ok, I had to put a caveat! 😂 I know…I know…I had to. Bear with me, ok?
So in as much as these affirmations activate God’s promises in our lives, I think affirmations can quickly fail to align to biblical truth.
Here is an example:
I used to see a shirt plastered all over social media that states, “I can do HARD things” OR “I can do ALL things.” Sometimes celebrities who didn’t believe in God would tout that. It was more like saying, “I myself can do anything, by my own power” (manifesting/law of attraction)
Question is- Can I do hard things? Sure, Can I do ALL things? Sure! But the verse states that we can do them (ALL THINGS- hard or easy or whatever) THROUGH CHRIST. If you remove Christ in that statement, then my friends, we can do absolutely nothing.
So, we come to our equation:
Tips on how to Create a List of Christian Affirmations
1. Use present tense to write your affirmation since God has already overcome! i.e., I am healed, I have been healed! Instead of saying, “I will be healed.”
2. Say it enthusiastically: as I said earlier, if you see me making my affirmations, I tend to look rather comical. I stare in the mirror and give myself a pep talk! I say my affirmations with conviction!
3. Use positive language: Now, ensure that you use positive words and language. Instead of saying, “I am not going to be defeated….” You are better of saying, “I am victorious.”
4. Then of course, make sure the affirmation has biblical/ scriptural backing. Also realize that it’s not about us. Simply put- God’s word & will first!
5. Tailor your affirmations to fit an area in your life you want to change! i..e. if you want to change something about confidence, look for biblical scripture that corresponds to that and tailor affirmations to that.
6. I encourage you to pray and seek God– Affirmations shouldn’t be taken lightly. Make sure you seek the counsel of the Holy Spirit to guide you through this to ensure God’s will is fully in it and not our flesh!!
7. Affirmations should never replace the word of God. I believe we should still memorize verses and work towards understanding them.
8. Know that the Lord knows your heart…Ok, so I want to let you know… you shouldn’t overthink or panic about writing your list. I believe the Lord knows your heart through this entire process. He loves you. ❤️When writing affirmations, ensure that your heart is in the right place.
LIST OF CHRISTIAN AFFIRMATIONS
Ok so here is the list that I curated. This isn’t my personal list that I use everyday…. They are a mix of all kinds of variations that I made based off scriptures that I think will resonate with you!
With that said, I want to emphasize that this is to ONLY give you ideas.
I encourage you to tailor your own based on the tips I just mentioned. This just serves as an example!!!
As always, please- ask for discernment through the process.
Also, the importance of saying the affirmation plus the corresponding verse is that it makes the word more personal. It applies to me & you- right now, right here and at this very moment! 💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿
