Power of the Tongue (A Reminder!)

Matthew 12:36-37 King James Version (KJV)

36 But I say unto you; That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words, thou shalt be condemned.

Proverbs 23:7 King James Version (KJV)

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he

Proverbs 18:21 King James Version (KJV)

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue

We live in a day and age when we need to “get things off our chest,” “upload our status” or “tell everyone what is on our mind” With that; we have created a culture that is open to saying whatever. As human beings, we are made in the image of God. If he created the whole world with words, I believe we can set the trajectory of our future in the same way- with words. We can either hurt our future or enable ourselves to fulfill our destinies.

One of my favorite Maya Angelou quotes speaks about words. She states, “Someday we’ll be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery, and your clothes, and finally into you.” How profound is that?! We can say things that we have no intention of affecting our lives, but if we keep saying them, we will become those very words we utter.

This past week, I was given a reminder about the power of words. I had been preparing for a big presentation since January. I was the project lead for the presentation, and I was preparing this with a colleague of mine who kept on saying- “I know I will get sick on the day of the presentation. I feel it”. I told her to stop saying this as words are powerful. My plea fell on deaf ears as she kept on saying this over and over again.

So I tell you, on the day of the presentation- she woke up throwing up like crazy and had a migraine. Her blood pressure was off the roof. She went to the emergency room and was there all day, missing the presentation as she said. I ended up doing the presentation by myself, and God gave me favor as It went well.

My question to you- What are you saying? Are your words hindering your prosperity? Are you attracting evil to your space by the words you utter?

If we want to start seeing the power of God manifest in our lives, we will have to start paying attention to what we say.
