Rita Springer has a powerful song in her album Battles. The song is titled, “Defender.” I love the version by UpperRoom worship (linked below). When I hear this song, I feel goosebumps and can’t help but weep. I weep because of the love of God. I weep because he jealously fights for us. Here are the first three verses in her song:
[Verse 1]
You go before I know
That You’ve even gone to win my war
You come back with the head of my enemy
You come back, and You call it my victory
[Verse 2]
You go before I know
That You’ve even gone to win my war
Your love becomes my greatest defense
It leads me from the dry wilderness
[Pre-Chorus]
And all I did was praise
And all I did was worship
And all I did was bow down
And all I did was stay still
During spiritual warfare, we feel like God is silent and he is ignoring our situation. At the height of the trial, the enemy whispers in our ears and tells us we are defeated. In actuality, God already worked behind the scenes- and he declared our victory. Long before we knew of the impending trial, God already fought for us and WON. What remains is the enemy’s futile attempt to bring the battle to our minds as he casts seeds of doubt. At that moment of trial where we feel like no end is in sight, we need to praise and worship our Lord.
I have noticed a trend in my life where it is always darkest before dawn. I have become accustomed to it, and I typically say this when I am going through a rough patch, “Wow, God is getting ready to bless me because the enemy is working overtime.” When the trial has ended, I am often met with a blessing that only God can bestow. We need to understand that all the enemy knows is scare tactics. That is his modus operandi (method of operation). He taunts you and makes you believe that he can destroy you. Well, he can’t! Don’t wave that white flag, STAND YOUR GROUND and fall on your knees.
The battle is in our minds.
Keep praying and worshiping through the storm, for God has already won the war!
